What Changes at the Ending
No, dialogue choices do not unlock a different ending in Valor Mortis: the final conversation changes what you hear, while the outcome stays the same. After the ending, you return near the final Lantern and can revisit earlier regions for missed collectibles, quests and achievements.
Spoiler Warning: Quest Outcomes and the Finale
The sections below reveal character decisions, quest outcomes, late-game rewards and the final boss. Stop here if you only wanted to know whether your dialogue choices change the ending.
Prepare Before the Fortress's High Tower
Earn at least 10 Mice friendship points before climbing the Fortress's High Tower. Finish The Shrike's Anthem, complete Mummy and Daddy without killing the parents, speak to the Mice about Afraid of the Dark, and collect the Outskirts conversation points to reach that threshold. Enough friendship earns the Mouse King's Giant Whisker Gift, worth 30,000 Catalysts, and the Mice's Key for a safe shortcut in Entropy.
Finish The Choir and The Forgotten Fortune while you are in Napoleon's Prison. Its Lanterns do not offer fast travel, so complete those errands during your escape. Ordinary region cleanup can wait until after the ending.
Story Choices and Their Consequences
| Choice and Location | Outcome or Reward |
|---|---|
| Meeting James at the Abandoned Church | Choose “Be honest.” or “Be secretive.” for the conversation you prefer. Neither option gives a reward or unlocks a different ending. |
| An Unheard Farewell in the Valley of Ashes | Agree to help the carriage officer to start the quest. Truth and lies both award Sleight of Hand; after resting, truth leaves an Epic Catalyst Clot at the carriage, while lying leaves Remnant's Return in the cave. |
| Meeting Lucjan in the Valley of Ashes | Both versions of this meeting offer “I remember.” and “I don't remember.” Neither answer changes a reward. |
| Louis in Fallen Village | “Go together.” sends Louis to the hideout with you; “Stay.” leaves him in the village. Both finish this part of the story, and neither reply awards loot. |
| Sleeping Beauty in Cursed Hollow | Letting her sleep gives a Distilled Transmutation Material and 2,000 Catalysts immediately. Waking her turns her into a monster you must kill; that route gives the material and 3,000 Catalysts. |
| Seamus Diggory near Silent Cannons | Wine awards 3,000 Catalysts; pig blood awards 1,000. Both give a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade and unlock Blood and Wine. |
| Bernie in The Outskirts | Answer “Great!” for 1 Mice friendship point. “Huh?” gives no friendship point or immediate reward. |
| Laudanum in The Outskirts | Helping the children poisons the medicine and lets them escape. Return after resting and read the upstairs diary for Potent Concoction. Unpoisoned medicine leaves the children dead; either outcome unlocks A Bitter Cure. |
| Bedtime Stories in the City of Orphans | “Offer help.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. After returning the book, agree to read a story to receive 2 Tiny Whisker Gifts instead of 1. |
| The Mice ask where you stand on the Shrike | “Say you are a believer.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. “Remain undecided.” adds nothing. |
| The Mice ask whether you believe in her | “I believe in her.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. “I don't believe in her.” adds nothing. |
| The Mice ask whether you like it | “Say you like it.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. “Say you hate it.” adds nothing. |
| The Mice ask about worshipping the bird | “Say you do.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. “Say you don't.” gives no point. |
| The Mice's guessing game | Choose “A dead rabbit.” for 1 extra friendship point. The conversation itself gives 2 more; “A rabbit.” gives no answer bonus. |
| Responding to the Mice's praise | “Be thankful.” adds 1 Mice friendship point. Being sarcastic gives no point or immediate reward. |
| Misericorde near Shamble Street | “End his suffering.” awards Remnant's Return and 3,000 Catalysts. “Do nothing.” awards only Remnant's Return. |
| Mummy and Daddy in the Sewers | Spare the parents and finish the music-box and Cheese route for 3 Mice friendship points. Attacking the parents fails the quest and turns the Mice against helping you. |
Reach the Final Fight and Ending
- Speak to Lucjan after escaping the jail and choose to go to the cave. He takes you to the Caverns > Ancient Lair Lantern.
- Interact with the stone door at the end of the area to trigger the Entity encounter, the final main boss fight.
- Parry the Entity's sword combos to build stagger and open a stun-attack opportunity. The encounter has 2 phases with 2 health bars, so the first depleted bar does not finish it.
- Shoot the appearing clones with the Pistol while the Entity floats and speaks between phases. When the speech ends, the boss drops back down and the next phase begins.
- Defeat the Entity to reach the concluding conversation in Entropy. Watch for its later Claymore swings, which are usually unblockable and should be dodged.
- Choose your preferred replies in the final conversation. They change the dialogue without changing the ending outcome or awarding a different final reward.
Continue Exploring After the Ending
After the final boss, you are placed back near the final Lantern. Earlier regions remain available for missing collectibles, unfinished side content and achievements. You can therefore finish the story before tackling ordinary cleanup.
Useful return trips include the poison areas connected to The Emissary and The King of Smugglers, which require Shield Transmutation. The Oathbound also leads to a secret room in the Fortress with an Empty Ferrofluid Flask and Quintessential Blade Material. Check those remaining goals before assuming you need another campaign to finish your equipment and collection tasks.
