Burn the Marshall and Attack Its Back
Defeat the Iron Marshall by shooting the arena’s explosive barrels to ignite it, then firing the Blunderbuss into the large weak point on its back. Parry its normal metal-pipe swings, dodge red-glowing attacks, and use its recovery openings to get behind it.
Find the Fight Near the Orchard Lantern
The Iron Marshall is the mandatory boss at the end of Chapter 3: Rendezvous in Fallen Village. The nearby checkpoint is the Orchard Lantern. Rekindle it before attempting the fight so that a defeat sends you back to a nearby Lantern.
Earlier on the route from Fallen Village > Fields, defeat the Volunteer carrying a large sword to reach the carriage behind it. The Blunderbuss is on the table inside, and collecting it opens the path through the other side of the carriage. This pickup is required for progression, so you should have the weapon before reaching the Marshall.
Prepare Your Weapons and Healing
Keep the Blunderbuss ready for the back weak point and the Rapier available for melee openings. The Rapier can parry but cannot provide a normal block, while the Saber can both block and parry. Choose the blade whose defensive style you can use consistently, and save your firearm openings for a clear view of the weak point.
A useful healing detour starts from Fallen Village > Fields. At the split with a wooden gate and a Grenadier on the right, take the opposite route toward the large house. The chest beside the well contains a Ferrofluid Flask Power Upgrade, which increases healing per use, and this route also links back to the prior Lantern.
If you have Iron Grip, consider equipping it for the attempt. It makes Ferrofluid Flask use faster and prevents the drinking action from being interrupted. To find it, return to The Battlefield > Trenches and turn right after the Plunge Attack tutorial instead of climbing the wooden ledge; the chest is in the dead end behind an enemy.
Defeat the Iron Marshall Step by Step
- Shoot an explosive barrel when the Marshall is beside it. The explosion can ignite the boss, creating a stunned opening for you to reposition.
- Move behind the Marshall while it is stunned by fire or recovering from an attack. This gives you an angle on the large weak point on its back.
- Fire the Blunderbuss into the back weak point. A successful hit deals substantial health and stun damage, making this a more useful opening than an untargeted shot.
- Parry a normal metal-pipe swing as the hit arrives. Its slow swings are generally parryable, and a successful parry negates damage while building the boss’s Posture bar.
- Dodge when an attack glows red. These attacks cannot be blocked or parried, so abandon your attack attempt and prioritise getting through the incoming hit.
- Perform a Critical Attack when the Marshall’s Posture breaks. This converts the pressure from your parries, melee hits, and weak-point shots into a damaging punish.
Keep the Defence Simple
Time a parry for the incoming hit rather than reacting immediately to the start of a slow swing. Pressing the defensive input as the attack lands is what produces a parry. If that timing keeps catching you out, favour a dodge and look for the opening after the attack instead.
You do not have Stasis during this first encounter with the Marshall. That Transmutation becomes available later in the Caverns, during Chapter 4: Dark Descent. For this fight, concentrate on barrels, your available blades, and the Blunderbuss rather than planning around a freeze.
Collect Your Rewards and Continue
Defeating the Marshall awards 7,000 Catalysts and unlocks Ultima Ratio Regum. The victory advances the campaign toward Chapter 4: Dark Descent in the Caverns. Before moving on, you can collect the nearby Glass Soldier Amber from a chest behind a building beside the arena.
- Climb into the building on the right of the arena, judging the direction from where you originally entered. This puts you on the route to the Glass Soldier chest.
- Break the boxes inside the building to clear the way toward its rear.
- Drop out of the back of the building to reach the chest containing Glass Soldier.
Recover From a Failed Attempt
If you die, you respawn at the last Lantern you Rekindled and leave your Catalysts where you fell. Recover them before another death, or they are lost permanently. For the next attempt, focus on creating a clear opening behind the Marshall before committing to your Blunderbuss shot.
If progression stops after you and a boss die together, install the available game updates. Updates include fixes for progression blockers caused by simultaneous player-and-boss deaths. If your save remains soft locked, the game’s support team can provide replacement saves at each chapter.
