How to Complete In the Name of Art

Complete In the Name of Art by moving the upstairs painting, retrieving the Basement Key from the grave outside, and collecting Painter’s Final Letter at the end of the basement. Finishing the quest rewards Butcher’s Carnage Amber.

02

Where to Start and What to Bring

Start from the Under the Bridge Lantern in Vale of Wrath during Chapter 5: Crime. The house you need has a blocked front door, with a weak point you can shoot through a window on its right side.

Have a firearm ready for the weak points, and bring Fire Transmutation for the blockage in the basement. Save some ammunition for opening the house and clearing the route revealed behind the painting.

If you have already moved on, you can return and finish In the Name of Art after the story. Passing the house does not require a new playthrough: you can come back to start the quest or complete its remaining interactions.

From the Blocked House to Painter’s Final Letter

  1. Reach the painter’s house from Under the Bridge. Cross the bridge, climb the stairs, and follow the route right past the carriages to the house on your left.
  2. Shoot the weak point through the window on the right side of the house. This clears the blocked front entrance so you can go inside.
  3. Head inside and upstairs to the body and painting. Watch for the exploding corpse and the hole in the floor hidden beneath wooden planks as you move through the house.
  4. Interact with the painting to the right of the body. It moves aside, starts In the Name of Art, and reveals an opening you can shoot through.
  5. Shoot the weak point through the revealed opening. This clears access to the outdoor area beside the house, where you can find the Basement Key.
  6. Collect the Basement Key beside the gravestone at the top of the hill outside. Look for the large gray cross in the clearing to the right of the house.
  7. Return to the house’s ground floor and find the door at the back. This is where you will use the Basement Key you recovered from the grave.
  8. Unlock the rear ground-floor door with the Basement Key. Opening it gives you access to the basement and the remaining quest route.
  9. Burn away the basement blockage with Fire Transmutation. Removing the obstruction lets you continue along the underground path.
  10. Defeat the Spitters and Carrion in the basement. Clear them before continuing deeper along the tunnel.
  11. Follow the flower-lined tunnel through the basement memories. The route leads to the final room and the woman’s body.
  12. Pick up Painter’s Final Letter from the ground in front of the body. Collecting the note completes In the Name of Art and awards Butcher’s Carnage Amber.

Butcher’s Carnage and Achievement Progress

Butcher’s Carnage Amber is the equipment reward for finishing this quest. Once you have it, open the level-up menu at a Lantern to equip it in an Amber slot.

You do not need to choose between rewards on this route. Follow the basement memories and collect Painter’s Final Letter to complete the quest and receive the Amber.

In the Name of Art has no dedicated quest achievement. Its reward is relevant to your Amber collection and Ambersmith, the achievement associated with gathering Ambers.

If the Quest Will Not Start or Finish

If interacting with the painting will not start the quest, update the game and revisit the house. Fixes have addressed both a failure to start In the Name of Art and problems with starting or progressing it in Chapter 5.

After applying those fixes, return to the quest location and carry out the remaining interactions. The fixes do not automatically add or resolve the affected side quests in your quest log.

If you have reached the end of the basement but the quest remains active, check the ground in front of the final body for Painter’s Final Letter. Watching the memories is part of the route; picking up the letter is the completion action.

For a progression softlock that persists, contact the game’s support team. It can provide replacement save files for individual chapters.
